Texas Patio Heater Pre-Install Checklist

Planning a patio heater before you buy is easier than fixing a bad install later. Use this Texas patio heater pre-install checklist to prepare for a quote, compare natural gas vs propane, and ask better questions before placing a heater under a patio cover, near an outdoor kitchen, or on a restaurant patio.

Planning only — not code or legal advice

This checklist is a planning worksheet, not a Texas code guide and not installation instructions. Always verify the heater manufacturer’s manual, local building/fire code, gas utility requirements, and your local AHJ/fire marshal. Natural gas line work should be handled by a licensed professional.

Who this checklist is for

Use this before buying or installing a patio heater for covered patios, pergolas, outdoor rooms, outdoor kitchens, restaurant patios, poolside seating areas, and homeowners comparing permanent natural gas heat vs portable propane heat.

Natural gas vs propane fit check

Fuel May be a good fit when… Confirm before buying
Natural gas You already have gas service, want a consistent heater location, use the patio often, and can have a licensed pro route the line. Gas-line capacity, BTU load, pipe route, shutoff location, permits/inspections, and model-specific clearances.
Propane The heater needs to move, the space is temporary/seasonal, no gas line is nearby, or the install budget is limited. Tank storage/changes, model-specific clearance, wind exposure, tip-over protection, and safe use around guests/pets/kids.

Before running a natural gas line: questions for the licensed pro

  • Where is the nearest safe tie-in point?
  • Is the existing gas service sized for the added BTU load?
  • What pipe size and route would be required?
  • Where should the shutoff valve be located?
  • What permits, inspections, utility approvals, or licensed-trade requirements apply in this city/county and for this gas utility?
  • Are there local rules for outdoor gas appliances and the specific heater type/model being considered?

Measure the patio before choosing a heater

  • Total patio size and the exact area you want warmed
  • Covered vs uncovered areas
  • Ceiling, roof, awning, pergola, or shade-sail height
  • Distance to walls, doors, windows, screens, curtains, plants, furniture, and covers
  • Dominant wind direction
  • Seating layout, walking paths, required accessible paths, door swings, and exits
  • Nearby combustible materials

Covered patio, pergola, and partially enclosed space checks

Before placing a fuel-burning heater under or near a structure, verify manufacturer-required top and side clearances, whether the exact model is approved for covered patio use, whether the area is open-air or partially enclosed, and whether wind could push heat toward combustible surfaces.

Safety-first rule: If the space is covered, screened, tented, or partially enclosed, treat the installation as higher-risk and confirm the heater manual, ventilation requirements, and local AHJ/fire-marshal guidance before use.

Restaurant and commercial patio add-ons

  • Staff opening checklist and shutdown checklist
  • Wind, shutdown, severe-weather, and movement/bump policy
  • Heater spacing plan between tables and walkways
  • Safe path of travel for guests and servers
  • Emergency shutoff location
  • Fire-safety equipment location required by the site’s fire plan or AHJ

What to send your contractor before a quote

  • Patio photos from 3–4 angles
  • Rough patio dimensions
  • Gas meter/location photo if applicable
  • Desired heater location or zones
  • Ceiling/cover height if covered
  • Product link or spec sheet for the heater you are considering
  • Your city/county location and any HOA, landlord, lease, or restaurant-patio rules

Questions to ask during the site visit

  • Is this heater type appropriate for this exact location?
  • Are the clearances workable?
  • Is the gas supply adequate for the heater BTU rating?
  • Where would you place the shutoff?
  • What permit, inspection, utility approval, or AHJ review applies?
  • What would make this install unsafe or not worth doing?

Red flags before buying

  • You do not know the clearance requirements
  • The heater will be under a low cover or close to an awning
  • The gas line route is unknown
  • The patio is windy and exposed
  • Furniture, umbrellas, plants, curtains, or foot traffic will crowd the heater
  • No licensed professional has reviewed the gas-line plan
